Best Games of 2026 You Probably Missed

8 games listedUpdated 8/19/2026
Every year a handful of enormous games absorb the entire conversation, and every year a dozen genuinely excellent mid-sized releases disappear underneath them. Not because they were bad, and usually not because reviews were unkind, but because they launched in the same month as something with a marketing budget. 2026 was a heavy year at the top. Between the major sequels and the platform flagships, there was very little oxygen left for anything without a publisher pushing it. The games below are what got buried. Nothing here is a hidden gem in the patronising sense. These are well-reviewed, finished, confident games that simply did not get their turn in the spotlight. If you spent the year on the obvious releases, this is the list that fills the gaps.

Methodology & FAQ

Selected from 2026 releases with strong critical reception but limited mainstream visibility, excluding major-publisher flagships and long-running franchise sequels.

Q: Are these all indie games?

Mostly, though a couple come from established mid-sized studios. The common factor is a lack of marketing reach rather than a small team.

Q: Will these still be worth playing next year?

Yes. None of these are live-service releases dependent on an active player base, so they will play identically whenever you get to them.

Q: Why are the year's biggest games not here?

Because you have already heard about them. This list exists specifically to cover what the coverage missed.
